Are solar batteries worth it in 2026? A builder's honest take
The short answer: a home battery is worth it when at least one of three things is true — you lose power more than rarely, your utility pays little for exported solar, or you're on time-of-use rates with expensive evenings. If none of those apply, a battery is a comfort purchase, not an investment. Both are legitimate; you just deserve to know which one you're buying.
The three questions that decide it
1. How often do you actually lose power?
Not "could you" — how often do you. Check your own memory of the last three years. If outages are a real recurring event (storm seasons, aging grid, wildfire shutoffs), backup has hard value: no spoiled food, no dead sump pump, no hotel nights, medical equipment stays on. If you've had one 20-minute blip since 2023, backup value is mostly peace of mind — real, but price it as such.
2. What does your utility pay for exported solar?
This is the question most homeowners haven't been told about. Under full-retail net metering, every kWh you export earns what you'd pay for it — a battery adds little financial value because the grid already acts like one. But many utilities have cut export rates to a fraction of retail. In those territories, storing your midday excess and using it yourself at night beats selling low and buying high — and the battery starts earning its keep daily, not just during outages.
3. Are you on time-of-use rates?
If your utility charges peak prices in the evening (often 4–9 pm), a battery shifts your cheap solar into the expensive window automatically. The wider the gap between peak and off-peak, the faster the battery pays back. Some utilities also run programs that pay battery owners for grid support during demand peaks — found money if your hardware qualifies.

A 13 kWh battery running a dedicated essentials circuit — refrigerator, lights, internet, phone charging, garage door — covers what most families genuinely need in an outage for roughly a day per charge, and indefinitely when solar recharges it each morning. Whole-home backup with air conditioning is a real product with a real (much larger) price, and some households truly need it. The builder's rule: size the battery to the problem you actually have, not the biggest one imaginable.
Battery lifespan, in plain terms
Modern lithium home batteries are typically warrantied for 10 years or a throughput amount, and degrade gradually rather than dying suddenly — expect meaningful but usable capacity at the warranty line. That's shorter than your panels' 25-year life, so a full system plan should acknowledge one battery replacement inside the solar system's lifetime. Quotes that pretend otherwise are hiding a cost.

- Weak net metering or time-of-use rates: usually yes — the battery works every single day.
